GREAT NEWS FROM THE CENTER FOR JUSTICE & DEMOCRACY
New York, NY - CJ&D's Executive Director, Joanne Doroshow, appeared yesterday on Pacifica radio's syndicated radio program, Democracy Now! on the topic: "The continuing politicization of the legal system: tort reform, big money, and judicial elections." Also on the show was Chip McConville, the Vice President of Citizens for a Strong Ohio and the Political Director of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and Randy Weston, spokesman for Citizens for an Independent Court and Associate Director of Ohio AFSCME United. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been saturating the airwaves in several states with commercials attacking judicial candidates, targeting in particular judges who have declared "tort reform" laws unconstitutional, as in Ohio. The entire program can be heard at: http://www.webactive.com/webactive/pacifica/demnow/dn20001101.html
Doroshow and Carl Deal, authors of THE CALA FILES: The Secret Campaign by Big Tobacco and Other Major Industries to Take Away Your Rights, are being honored by the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association with this year's Hoosier Freedom Award. Ceremonies take place November 16, 2000.
Karen Duffy, actress, model and correspondent for TV Nation and The Awful Truth, lists CJ&D (as our predecessor organization Citizens for Corporate Accountability & Individual Rights) in the "resources" section of her new book Model Patient; My Life As an Incurable Wise-Ass. Duff calls us, "A corporate watchdog organization that tries to protect the right of the little guy to sue some big bad companies, including health-care companies." It's a great, funny and poignant book. Please go out and get it!
Look for big changes at the Center for Justice & Democracy, as we begin an exciting new membership program early next year. More on that soon!
