Bush to tout malpractice reform

The agenda for President Bush's visit Wednesday to the metro-east is simple: fly in, give a speech on the need for caps on awards in medical malpractice lawsuits, fly out.
The White House on Monday confirmed the president will speak Wednesday to an audience of about a thousand medical providers and elected officials on the issue of medical malpractice lawsuit caps. Bush will speak about 1:15 p.m. at the invitation-only event in Collinsville's Gateway Center.

The New York-based Center For Justice and Democracy, which states that its mission is to educate people about "the importance of the civil justice system and the dangers of so-called tort reforms," will hold a news conference today at the Collinsville Holiday Inn. Laurie Beacham, a spokesman for the group, said several Illinoisans who have been injured or have had relatives killed because of medical malpractice will be on hand.
On Wednesday, representatives of that group will deliver a letter to Bush's staff, demanding that he discuss the issue with them.
The Center For Justice and Democracy's executive director, attorney Joanne Doroshow, said Bush's visit is "a publicity stunt for him to try to advocate legislation which has failed three times the past two years in Congress. We hope Congress will once again refuse to enact it."
