The Inland Empire’s largest school district, San Bernardino City Unified, spent more than $1 million on outside legal counsel last school year, and more than $4 million over three years, according to a new report.

A group calling itself California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, part of a nationwide campaign of allied groups promoting tort reform released the report, “Schools Cut Back as Litigation Costs Eat into Budgets” on Monday.

Although Scott described his group as a “grassroots organization,” the CALA organizations are actually funded by the tobacco industry and other industries stung by lawsuits in the past, according to a report jointly released by the Center for Justice and Democracy and Public Citizen in 2000.
