Letter to the Editor: Chamber should be up front about newspaper

Illinois’ State Journal-Register
Saturday, January 1, 2005

This is concerning Adriana Colindres' Dec. 13 article, "Newspaper focuses on Madison County civil suits."
Your article about the Madison County Record fails to address the troublesome fact that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce does not disclose its partial ownership of the paper in print. Readers of the Madison County Record deserve to know the ownership and agenda of the paper.
The paper is not objective journalism. Its political agenda shows up in the paper's style of reporting and its opinion pieces. The chamber has already spent $40 million this year to further its tort reform legislative and political goals and is one of the nation's chief lobby groups on these issues.
If it's backing a newspaper, readers should know about it.
