Consumer Groups to Watch Insurance Companies Alabama Watch, the statewide nonprofit consumer research, education and protection organization is partnering with Americans for Insurance Reform on the Katrina Insurance Hotline Project. Alabama Watch Director Barbara Evans said today, "This is a time for insurance companies to fulfill the promise of their coverage. Alabamians have been paying high premiums for years and now those hit by storm damage need the insurance companies to make good on claims in an efficient and fair manner. We are fortunate indeed to have the resources of our partners, Americans for Insurance Reform and Consumer Federation of America to insure that Alabama families' claims are paid timely." Barbara Evans is the director of Alabama Watch. Alabama Watch is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, statewide consumer research, education and advocacy group representing the interests of Alabama families … J. Robert Hunter, AIR co-founder, Director of Insurance for the Consumer Federation of America and former Federal Insurance Administrator, stated, "We are very concerned that consumers will be shortchanged in claims settlements with those with no flood insurance most at risk. That’s why a telephone monitoring service is so important. If we see abuse, we can warn government agencies and the media. For those with wind and flood insurance, we are seeking procedures to be put in place to assure fast payment of claims while protecting taxpayers from paying more than their fair share in any claim." "The fact that the insurance industry should even be questioning their obligation to pay these claims is the height of corporate irresponsibility," saidJoanne Doroshow, AIR co-founder and Executive Director for the Center for Justice & Democracy.
